20 Keys for Interview Winning Resumes – A guest post by Career Strategist, Rebecca Kieler

A resume must do 2 things to get you called in for an interview:

Make a Great First Impression…  Prove you can do the job…

In order to do these first 2, you must be crystal clear on what position you want.

Do not pass GO, do not collect $200 – until you know what you are looking for.

It is pretty hard to put yourself out there looking for it if you are unclear about what you want!

How are you doing so far?

  1. Relevant, Relevant, Relevant (if it is not relevant, it probably does not belong on your document)
  2. 2 pages max (the rest just doesn’t get read, if you need an addendum we’ll talk)
  3. 10-12 years of work history (everything else is considered ancient history unless highly RELEVANT- yes, let’s talk)
  4. It is not recommended for anyone to use a street address anymore
  5. Target position Immediately Clear? (The title the hiring company is using)
  6. Summary is the last thing you write (goes at the beginning) and should be your Claim to Fame!
  7. Accomplishment Statements, where possible quantified and bottom-line oriented. State your achievements and show your value add!
  8. Are the strengths that would justify your eligibility for this position immediately clear?
  9. Is the proof of these strengths shown?
  10. Are priorities of the employer reflected back to the reader?
  11. Are the hiring companies’ key words visible in the first 10 seconds?
  12. No pronouns, no 1st person
  13. Use Complete Thoughts v/s complete or proper sentence structure.
  14. Resumes are scanned down the left ½ of the page
  15. You must be able to speak to your resume in the interview
  16. It must be easily readable, bullets are recommended/3-4 lines text max, for readability
  17. Never lie as it’s just not worth it
  18. The second page should have a header or footer with name and contact
  19. No dates on school more than 5 years old.
